Description

A small group of church friends lingers after a ministry meeting, talking casually, until the conversation turns sharp. They begin mocking someone who isn’t there, calling it “honesty” and “just telling the truth.” The laughter comes too easily, and the words grow harsher as they feed off each other. Mr. Reynolds stays slightly apart, uncomfortable but quiet. When they notice his silence, they push him to join in, implying that if he doesn’t speak up, he must agree.

A narrator briefly interrupts to remind the audience that words don’t just describe reality, they shape hearts and souls. Mr. Reynolds finally steps in, not with an attack, but with a boundary. He gently but firmly says, “This doesn’t sound like the Christian life we talk about on Sundays.” The group reacts defensively: one storms off, offended, while another shows visible shame and regret. The scene closes with Mr. Reynolds alone, praying for wisdom, forgiveness, and courage, showing that love sometimes costs social comfort, but it honors Christ.

Theme

Christian love speaks with grace and truth; careless words damage hearts and reflect a life out of step with Christ.

Characters

(4–5 actors)

  • Narrator – steps in briefly to reflect and guide the audience

  • Mr. Reynolds – quiet, thoughtful believer who chooses love over comfort

  • Dana – blunt, quick to justify harshness as “honesty”

  • Marco – joins gossip for laughs, defensive when corrected

  • Tara – participates at first, then grows ashamed (can be removed if needed)

When

Present day, right after a church meeting.

Props & Costumes

  • A few chairs (small-group circle)

  • Paper handouts or a notebook

  • One phone (optional, to imply group chat)

  • Simple church-appropriate outfits

Why

Ephesians 4:29 – “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up…”
Meaning: Our words should build, not bruise. Christians are called to speak with grace and purpose.

How

A small circle of chairs suggests a church classroom or fellowship hall. Mr. Reynolds stands slightly outside the circle to show distance and tension.
