Summary

On a quiet hillside outside Bethlehem, Abbo—the smallest lamb in the flock—feels tiny, unimportant, and full of questions. As he listens to the shepherds talk about “peace on earth” and a promised Savior, Abbo wonders if good news like that could ever include someone as small as him. Then, in the middle of an ordinary night, the sky explodes with light as angels appear, announcing that a Savior has been born in Bethlehem and that this good news is for all people. Abbo and the shepherds, frightened but thrilled, decide to leave the hillside and go see the baby for themselves.

Following the bright star and their newfound hope, Abbo shuffles along the crowded streets of Bethlehem until they reach a small stable and a simple manger. There, in a place that feels familiar to a little lamb, Abbo realizes that God chose to come close in a humble way so no one would be afraid to approach Him—not even the smallest sheep. As shepherds, travelers, and Abbo gather around Jesus, the tiny lamb offers the only gift he has: his small but sincere heart. Through Abbo’s eyes, children learn that God sees, loves, and invites even the smallest and most uncertain into His great story.

Theme

God sees and values even the smallest and uses our questions and curiosity to lead us closer to Jesus.

Characters

(8–12 actors; some roles can be doubled)

  • Narrator – Warm, steady voice who guides the story and speaks to the audience.

  • Abbo – The smallest lamb in the flock; curious, energetic, sometimes confused, but full of wonder.

  • Eli – Young shepherd; kind, a little playful, explains things to Abbo.

  • Mara – Older child/helper; gentle, thoughtful, and encouraging.

  • Josiah – Older shepherd; responsible leader of the flock, wise but approachable.

  • Angel – Main angel messenger; calm, joyful, and clear.

  • Extra Angels – Optional children who join in the song and praise.

  • Extra Sheep / Children – Optional non-speaking roles to fill out the flock.

When

Biblical times, on the night of Jesus’ birth, are told in a simple, child-friendly way.

Props & Costumes

  • Simple shepherd costumes (robes, scarves, staffs)

  • Lamb ears or headbands for Abbo and other “sheep”

  • A small “campfire” made of orange tissue paper and a light

  • A large paper or cardboard star hanging above the stage

  • One white robe or light-colored outfit for Angel

  • Optional: soft background music for transitions

Why

This skit is built around Luke 2:10–11: “But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David, a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.’”

The verse reminds us that Jesus came as good news for all people, not just the important or impressive. Through Abbo, children see that God’s love and salvation are for even the smallest, most unsure hearts.

How

The stage can be very simple: one side as a hillside with shepherds and a “campfire,” and the other side reserved for the stable, which appears in Part 2. Most of the acting happens with easy movements and expressive dialogue. The glowing star and lighting changes help show when something special is happening.
