This is Part 2 of the 20-minute skit. In Part 1, Tiana’s homemade “Time Machine Talk Show” took her Black family from Grandma’s living room to the shepherds’ field on the first Christmas night. They learned that Christmas is “good news of great joy for all people.”

In Part 2, the time machine jumps again. The family meets Mary, a young Black woman portraying the mother of Jesus, who honestly shares her fears, faith, and trust in God. Then they meet the Wise Men, portrayed as three African American soldiers home on leave, who bring meaningful gifts and a bit of musical fun.

By the end, the family returns to Grandma’s living room with a new understanding of Christmas. Led by Tiana and Grandma Pearl, they reflect on the birth of Jesus and read the core verse of the skit: “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” – Luke 2:11

They decide to celebrate Christmas not just with gifts and decorations, but with worship, love, and gratitude.

Theme

Christmas, faith, and spiritual growth – realizing that the heart of Christmas is Jesus, God’s gift of a Savior, and choosing to center celebrations around Him.

Characters

(Part 2 uses the same family, plus new Bible characters.)

  • Narrator – Warm, steady guide through the story.

  • Tiana – Young host of the “Time Machine Talk Show,” sincere and curious.

  • Grandma Pearl – Wise matriarch, loving and grounded in Scripture.

  • Malik – Teen cousin, sarcastic, but his heart is softening.

  • Aaliyah – Cousin, loves aesthetics & social media, now thinking deeper.

  • Jayden – Little brother, energetic, honest.

  • Uncle Reggie – Family jokester, but takes Jesus seriously by the end.

  • Mary – Young Black woman, strong and tender, full of faith and questions.

  • Melchior – Wise Man #1 / soldier, thoughtful, calm.

  • Balthazar – Wise Man #2 / soldier, joyful, likes to sing.

  • Caspar – Wise Man #3 / soldier, expressive, a bit dramatic.

  • Angel – (optional) same voice/actor from Part 1, brief appearance.

(If you need fewer actors, some family members can also play shepherds or wise men.)

When

Modern day (Christmas Eve), with time jumps back to Biblical times during the nativity story.

Props & Costumes

(Combined with Part 1 – just adding here for clarity.)

  • Cardboard “Time Machine” box (already on stage)

  • Couch/chairs for Grandma’s living room

  • Simple robe and head covering for Mary

  • Simple soldier-style jackets/hats or coordinated outfits for Wise Men (to suggest African American soldiers on leave)

  • Wrapped boxes for gold, frankincense, myrrh

  • Star prop (cardboard or hanging)

  • Simple manger setup (cloth in a box, no live baby needed)

No technical effects are necessary—sound and light changes can be mimed or done very simply.

Why

The skit should end with this verse, said clearly near the finale: “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” – Luke 2:11

This verse clearly and beautifully centers the story on Jesus as Savior—God’s gift to ordinary people, in every time and place.

How

Two main stage looks:

  1. Grandma’s Living Room – couch/chairs, time machine box front and center.

  2. Bethlehem scenes – move or turn the furniture aside; bring the manger/stable area and star into focus.

Time jumps are done with simple light shifts, sound effects (“whooosh”), and the cast pretending to feel the “travel.”
