The story follows Jonah, a well-meaning but easily-distracted shepherd who shows up late to the nativity—again—because, once more, he’s lost his sheep. His fellow shepherds Ruth and Abel are not surprised; “this is exactly what happened last year!”

As Jonah blames north pole winds, a sneaky goat, and even the wise men, the laughter builds. The missing sheep eventually reappears wearing a garland made from leftover decorations, delighting kids and adults alike.

Amid the humor, the skit gently shifts into a heartfelt moment at the manger. Jonah admits his mistakes, kneels before baby Jesus, and realizes that no matter how often he gets lost or distracted, God never stops seeking him or bringing him back.

This simple, easy-to-stage skit powerfully teaches children that God’s love is patient, forgiving, and constant—especially when we feel lost.

Cast of Characters

• Shepherd JONAH – The “forgetful” shepherd who always loses a sheep. Funny, dramatic, easily distracted, and very lovable.

• Shepherd RUTH – Responsible, kind, and slightly exasperated with Jonah. Tries to keep everyone on track.

• Shepherd ABEL – Playful, likes to tease Jonah, but has a big heart.

Non-speaking roles (optional, can be done by puppets or props):

• SHEEP – A plush toy, puppet, or simple costume.

• BABY JESUS – A doll in a simple manger scene on one side of the stage.

• (Mary/Joseph can be implied offstage or represented by still figures; no extra actors required.)

Setting & Staging

• Side A of Stage: “Hillside” – a few stools, a blanket, maybe a cardboard rock or two.

• Side B of Stage: “Stable / Nativity” – a manger with a doll, perhaps a simple star decoration.

• A small path between the two sides to suggest walking from the fields to Bethlehem.

• Sound cues (optional): gentle “baa,” wind sound, angel “ahhh” sound, etc.
