WHAT
A hilarious, high-energy skit following a performing arts director holding auditions for the church’s nativity play. Every child auditioning misunderstands their role completely—Mary acts like a superhero, King Herod sings instead of acting, a shepherd brings a plastic alligator instead of a sheep, and the “angel of the Lord” refuses to wear a halo. Chaos builds until the director realizes that heart matters more than perfection. The skit ends with all the children learning (and performing) the true Christmas story.
THEME
The best Christmas story isn’t perfect—it’s sincere.
WHO
Director – patient, dramatic, frazzled
Mary Auditioner – thinks Mary is a superhero
Herod Auditioner – wants to sing everything
Shepherd Auditioner – carries a plastic alligator
Angel Auditioner – wants the role but hates halos
(Optional: a Stage Assistant or extra kids reacting.)
HOW
Children come onstage one at a time or in groups to “audition.” The director becomes increasingly overwhelmed but ultimately guides them into a simple, heartfelt retelling of Jesus’ birth. Simple props like a clipboard, chairs, and costume pieces support the humor.
PROPS
Clipboard, plastic alligator, a halo headband, a blanket (optional), and simple chair “waiting area.”
