WHAT:

The church youth drama club is holding open auditions for their annual Christmas play. Everyone wants the “big” parts — Mary, Joseph, the Angel, the Wise Men — but nobody wants to play the donkey. Or the sheep. Or the innkeeper's wife.
Amid dramatic monologues, cringey accents, interpretive dance attempts, and way-too-serious wannabe actors, the Director struggles to keep the auditions organized. In the end, a quiet girl who didn’t think she mattered is given the role no one wanted — and delivers the most heartfelt moment of the night.

THEMES:

Everyone matters · Humility · Serving God joyfully · Purpose · God’s story · Christmas

WHO (8–10 ACTORS):

  • Director — stressed, organized, trying desperately to stay patient

  • Assistant Director (AD) — cheerful, supportive, often confused

  • Tara — dramatic diva, wants to play Mary

  • Liam — overconfident, wants Joseph or NOTHING

  • Serena — dramatic angel-wannabe with glitter wings

  • Dante — method actor, overdoes everything

  • Cameron — comedian; wants to improvise wise men lines

  • Riley — shy kid, barely speaks

  • Optional: Two more kids auditioning for sheep or wise men roles

COSTUMES:

Casual rehearsal clothes; optional audition props (scarves, cardboard halos, staff, etc.).

PROPS:

Clipboard, scripts, toy donkey ears, angel wings, staff, glitter, crown, table of props.

WHY:

To remind youth that every role in God’s story matters — big or small — and that God sees the heart.

HOW:

Stage is a “church fellowship hall” turned audition room. Front table for Director & AD, open center stage for auditions, side table with silly props.

TIME:

~10 minutes
