The First Christmas Story” is a simple, heartfelt nativity play that follows Mary and Joseph on their journey to Bethlehem, the birth of Jesus in a humble stable, the angels’ announcement to the shepherds, and the visit of the wise men bringing gifts. Designed for children and family audiences, this skit uses gentle humor, clear narration, and easy dialogue to show that God chose an ordinary night, ordinary people, and an ordinary place to bring the Savior into the world. 

The play ends by inviting the audience to remember that Jesus is God’s greatest gift of love and that Christmas is about worshipping Him with humble, thankful hearts.

• Narrator 1 – Guides the story, calm and clear, speaks to the audience.

• Narrator 2 – Helps tell the story, adds gentle humor, and explanations.

• Mary – Young, gentle, trusting God even when she is tired and afraid.

• Joseph – Kind and protective, trying his best to care for Mary and follow God’s instructions.

• Innkeeper – Busy and a bit overwhelmed, but kind-hearted; offers the stable.

• Head Angel (Gabriel or Grace) – Leads the angels; joyful and confident in God’s message.

• Angel 2 & Angel 3 – Excited, childlike angels; join the announcement and praise.

• Shepherd 1 – Slightly older, responsible shepherd; cares for the flock.

• Shepherd 2 – Younger, curious, adds light humor and questions.

• Shepherd 3 (optional) – Extra shepherd to balance lines if you have more kids.

• Wise Man 1 – Brings gold; respectful and serious.

• Wise Man 2 – Brings frankincense; thoughtful and calm.

Props & Costumes

• Simple robes or tunics for all main characters (can use large scarves or blankets).

• Veil or shawl for Mary.

• Simple head covering for Joseph and the shepherds.

• Shepherds’ staffs (can be made from cardboard or sticks).

• Three small boxes or bags as gifts (gold, frankincense, myrrh).

• A manger (a simple box with cloth) and a wrapped doll as Baby Jesus.

• A large star on a stick or hanging above the stage.

• Optional: small toy sheep, toy donkey ears or headband, paper crowns for the wise men.

• Background: a manger/stable area, and a simple Christmas tree or starry backdrop if available.

Why

This skit highlights the good news announced on the first Christmas: that God sent His Son to be our Savior. The central verse reminds the audience that Christmas is about receiving Jesus and rejoicing in God’s gift:

“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:11 KJV)

Jesus didn’t come just for important people; He came “unto you” – for shepherds, wise men, children, and every person today.

How

The stage can be divided into simple areas:

• One side of the road to Bethlehem and the inn (a sign that says “INN”).

• Center stage for the stable with the manger.

• The other side of the shepherds’ field (toy sheep or simple cloth on the floor).

• The wise men begin at the back or side and move toward the manger following the “Star.”

Lighting can be very simple:

• Slightly dim for the night scenes.

• Slightly brighter when the angels appear and near the end for the closing.
