Snowflakes and Glory: A Contemporary Nativity for Black Churches

This 15-minute children’s skit takes place in a small Black church classroom on a December Sunday. A group of kids is supposed to practice a simple Christmas reading and mini-nativity, but they keep getting distracted by questions about snow, winter, and what Christmas really has to do with their own lives.

Their teacher, Ms. Jackson, uses paper snowflakes to show that just like no two snowflakes are the same, no two children are the same—and God made each of them on purpose. The kids then act out the nativity story with colorful, playful costumes, learning that the same God who sent Jesus on that first Christmas also made each of them “fearfully and wonderfully.”

With light humor, off-key carols, and sweet childlike honesty, the skit shows that Christmas is about God’s love coming close to every generation and every child.

Characters

(7–10 actors; some kids can play more than one role.)

• Narrator – Clear, warm voice; guides the audience through the story.

• Ms. Jackson – Children’s teacher, bright holiday sweater, gentle, firm when needed, deeply loves Jesus and the kids.

• Amari – Curious, thoughtful child; asks big questions.

• Zoe – Energetic, loves singing and dancing.

• Caleb – Practical, likes facts and asking “why.”

• Nyla – Shy but very observant; speaks up more as the skit goes on.

• Micah – Funny, a little dramatic, keeps things light.

• J.J. – Youngest child, very honest and adorable.

• Mary – Role in nativity, played by Nyla or Zoe.

• Joseph – Role in nativity, played by Amari or Caleb.

• Wise Men 1–3 – Roles in nativity, played by any of the kids plus Micah and J.J.

(You can combine roles depending on the number of children.)

When

Modern day – a Sunday school classroom and a simple switch into Biblical times during the nativity reenactment.

Props & Costumes

Keep it simple and child-friendly:

• Bright holiday sweater for Ms. Jackson

• Simple church classroom setup (chairs, small table, maybe a “Sunday School” sign)

• White paper and child-safe scissors (for paper snowflakes – can be pre-cut or cut onstage)

• A few large pre-made paper snowflakes taped around

• Simple nativity costumes:

• Scarf or shawl for Mary

• Simple robe or oversized shirt and scarf for Joseph

• Colorful robes or large T-shirts with gold stars taped on for the Wise Men

• A small box or basket for “baby Jesus” with a cloth inside

• Construction-paper star on a stick or hanging

• Simple microphones made of paper towel rolls (optional)

Why

The main verse and message of the skit:

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” – Psalm 139:14

The children learn that the God who sent Jesus at Christmas is the same God who made each of them unique and precious.

How

The stage is split into two simple spaces:

1. Church Classroom: Chairs in a semicircle, table with paper, scissors, and a Bible.

2. Nativity Space: When it’s time, the kids step to one side, put on simple robes and scarves, and stand around a small “manger” to create the nativity scene.
   Transitions are done by Narrator and Ms. Jackson; no major set changes needed—just movement and imagination.
