Description

Nazareth to the Temple Site” follows Jesus as a twelve-year-old boy traveling with Mary and Joseph from their quiet home in Nazareth to Jerusalem for the Passover feast. Along the way, we see His simple obedience in everyday life, His wonder as He hears the stories of God’s faithfulness, and His deep hunger to be close to His Father.

At the temple, Jesus stays behind, listening and asking questions among the teachers, amazing everyone with His understanding. Mary and Joseph, thinking He is with relatives, accidentally leave Him behind and spend three days searching for Him in fear and sorrow. When they finally find Him in the temple, Jesus gently reminds them that He must be about His Father’s business. The skit ends with a message of trusting God’s work in the lives of those we love and choosing, like Jesus, to seek the Father’s will in both ordinary and holy moments.

Theme

Obedience and seeking God’s will above all.

Characters

(12–16 actors, some roles can be doubled)

  • Narrator – Guides the story, explains transitions, and speaks to the audience.

  • Jesus (age 12) – Respectful, thoughtful, deeply drawn to God’s presence and Word.

  • Mary – Loving, caring, sensitive, sometimes anxious, treasures things in her heart.

  • Joseph – Steady, kind, hardworking, protective of his family.

  • Neighbor Child 1 – Curious, talkative, adds humor.

  • Neighbor Child 2 – Slightly dramatic, funny, often tired of walking.

  • Pilgrim – An older traveler who tells stories of God’s miracles.

  • Cousin – A family member in the traveling group.

  • Teacher 1 – Temple teacher, respectful and impressed.

  • Teacher 2 – Another teacher asks thoughtful questions.

Biblical times, during Jesus’ childhood (Luke 2:41–52).

Props & Costumes

  • Simple robes and shawls for all characters

  • Small scroll (for Jesus/teachers)

  • A few bundles or cloth bags to represent travel packs

  • Simple carpenter’s tools (wood block, small hammer, etc.)

  • One area for the temple courts (benches for teachers).

Time

Approximately 15 minutes.
