A few years ago I hiked a trail that climbed into the clouds. Clear at the parking lot; thick fog halfway up. I couldn’t see ten feet ahead. I kept stopping, waiting for the whole path to appear. It never did. A friend handed me a small headlamp and a pocket compass. “You don’t need the whole mountain,” he said. “You just need the next few steps—keep them in the right direction.” So I watched the beam light the ground right in front of my boots, checked the compass, and walked. The summit didn’t suddenly appear, but step by step, the way did.
