After the youth group, a well-meaning youth leader makes a simple request: could a few teens stack chairs, welcome newcomers next week, or bring snacks? What should be a quick “Sure!” turns into an instant comedy show, because the teens unleash a tidal wave of excuses. One teen claims they can’t volunteer due to “privacy policy concerns,” as if stacking chairs requires signing a data-sharing agreement. Another insists they “served last week” and therefore needs a spiritual recovery day, complete with a dramatic sigh and imaginary fainting couch. A third teen says their schedule is full of “important public school stuff,” presenting homework like it’s a legal exemption from kindness.
As the excuses grow more ridiculous, the room begins to feel like a “volunteer black hole,” where every helpful request disappears into endless reasons. The youth leader tries to keep it light, but the moment turns unexpectedly meaningful when a younger student steps forward and innocently asks who the body of Christ is supposed to be if everyone opts out. The laughter fades, and the youth leader gently reminds everyone that serving isn’t about being impressive or having the perfect schedule, it’s about faithfully loving others in small, real ways that look like Jesus.
