When I was a kid, my grandmother kept a basket by her chair filled with scraps of fabric—little pieces too small to be useful. She wouldn’t throw them away. Instead, she stitched them, one by one, into a quilt. It took time. It didn’t match. But on a winter night when the power went out, that quilt kept us warm. I remember thinking, “Grandma made something strong from all the small, mismatched pieces.”
