Cousins Before the Cross — John the Baptist Skit (15 min)

Scene one: a young, pregnant Mary visits her older cousin Elizabeth. The baby John leaps in Elizabeth's womb the moment Mary's voice is heard. Elizabeth's lines are full of awe; Mary's Magnificat closes the scene. Scene two jumps thirty years forward to the river Jordan. The same two characters — now grown men, Jesus and his cousin John — meet on the riverbank. John recognizes the Son of God. Jesus asks to be baptized. The Holy Spirit descends like a dove. The skit connects Luke 1 to Matthew 3 in a way most church programs never do.

Theme — Calling and recognition can begin in the womb and last a long time. The cousin who leaped at her voice is the one who points the world to her son.
