Description

John the Baptist is in chains in Herod's dungeon. He's been there a long time. A guard, two of his disciples, Herod, Herodias, and Salome share the stage in a tight, claustrophobic set. John's question to his disciples is the one no Sunday school class wants to hear from him: "Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?" They carry the question to Jesus. Jesus' answer is the climax — and it doesn't include the rescue John was hoping for.

Theme — Doubt is not the opposite of faith. The same prophet who saw the dove descend can still ask the question from the dark.
