Eli is a middle school student in a church youth group who secretly believes the world would be better without him. After a hard night, he blurts out that he wishes he had never been born and runs out of the church. Heaven hears his cry, and an angel named Seraph is sent to meet him.
Through a journey that weaves between modern life and the very first Christmas in Bethlehem, Eli watches the shepherds hear the “good news of great joy,” and he begins to see the story he’s always heard in a new way. At the same time, his family searches for him, praying and remembering how deeply his life has touched theirs. In Part 1, the conflict opens and the journey begins; in Part 2, Eli will see even more of what would be lost if he had never existed, and he will discover that Jesus came for him personally.
Theme
Christmas, identity, and the value of one life in God’s eyes; learning that Jesus’ “good news of great joy for all people” truly includes you.
Characters
(10 actors; roles like Narrator, Angel Host, and some Shepherds can be double-cast if needed.)
-
Eli – A middle school/early teen boy in the church youth group; feels invisible and believes his life doesn’t matter.
-
Mom – Eli’s caring but worried mother; tries to reach his heart.
-
Dad – Eli’s steady, practical father; loves Eli deeply, though he doesn’t always know how to show it.
-
Sister – Eli’s younger, energetic sibling who looks up to him more than he realizes.
-
Angel (Seraph) – A gentle, slightly humorous messenger from God who guides Eli through the journey.
-
Narrator – Sets the scenes, connects the modern and biblical worlds, and guides the audience’s understanding.
-
Shepherd 1, Shepherd 2, Shepherd 3 – Ordinary, slightly comedic shepherds who witness the angelic announcement on the first Christmas.
-
Angel Host – Proclaims the good news to the shepherds with joy and authority.
When
In modern times, with heavenly visions that transport Eli back to Biblical Bethlehem on the night of Jesus’ birth.
Props & Costumes
-
Simple Christmas tree with lights
-
Box of decorations/string lights
-
Folding chairs and snack table
-
Cardboard or simple nativity set
-
Backpack for Eli
-
Simple robes or tunics and headscarves for Shepherds and Angel Host
-
Shepherd staffs (or simple sticks)
-
A few stuffed sheep
-
Light sash or scarf for Angel (Seraph)
Why
The skit draws especially from Luke 2:10–11, where the angel announces “good news of great joy… for all the people” and declares that a Savior has been born. The message is that Jesus came not just in a general way for the world, but personally for each individual—including those who feel overlooked, unwanted, or like their life has no purpose.
How
Use one stage divided mainly into two suggestion areas:
-
One side is the church youth room (tree, chairs, snacks, nativity set).
-
The other side becomes Bethlehem (hillside with crates as rocks, then town/stable area).
Lighting changes and simple movement of props shift between modern scenes and biblical visions. Eli and Angel (Seraph) stand slightly apart when they are “unseen” by the other characters.
