A Simple Christmas is a children-led Christmas skit that tells the story of Jesus’ birth through simple scenes, gentle narration, and small moments of humor. A group of kids in a modern church setting prepares to act out the Nativity story. As they rehearse and perform, they discover that God loves to use simple people, small stages, and imperfect moments to share His perfect love.

The skit moves between the “behind-the-scenes” kids (who speak as themselves) and the Nativity characters (Mary, Joseph, angels, etc.). Through their honest questions, nervousness, and wonder, the children—and the audience—are reminded that Christmas is not about big productions or perfect performances, but about Jesus coming close to us.

Theme

Christmas, trust in God, and how God uses simple, ordinary people and places to show His great love.

Props & Costumes

  • Simple Bible or printed scripts

  • A cardboard manger and a small cloth “baby”

  • Tinsel halos and simple white or light-colored fabric for angels

  • Shawls or robes for Mary, Joseph, and travelers

  • A cardboard or cloth donkey (ears on a headband, or a donkey sign)

  • Simple signs: “Nazareth,” “Road to Bethlehem,” “Inn”

  • Small battery candles for Angel Choir

  • A few boxes labeled “Costumes” and a lightly decorated Christmas tree

Why

The skit highlights the promise of Luke 2—that Jesus, the Savior, came for all people. Mary, Joseph, and the children in the skit learn to trust God even when they don’t fully understand His plan. The message is that God’s love reaches into ordinary moments and simple places, inviting us to believe that He is with us.

How

The stage is divided into two main areas:

  • A modern church rehearsal area with chairs, boxes, and a half-decorated tree where the kids speak as themselves.

  • A Bible-story area that becomes Nazareth, Joseph’s home, and the road to Bethlehem with just a few simple props and signs.

Narrators stand to the side, stepping forward to guide the story and introduce each scene. Between scenes, kids move props in full view, reinforcing the “simple” and child-led style.
